There's no Olympics or jubilee and lots of dismal reports and dreadful economic news ahead. The outlook is all so gloomy and dreary and depressing and hopeless.

Then there's the New Year resolutions: don't bother to make any because you know you won't keep them. Let's make some collective resolutions instead: to look after the young, the old, the vulnerable. I'm sure we'll have much better luck with those resolutions.
