And IIRC there was a certain amount of busybodyness going on as well. There was definitely (at least among some) a sense of Doing Good and Being Pious, and there were a few pointed sermons preached against the Scoring of Brownie Points.

There was also the unpleasant tragedy of how one of the more notorious busybodies suffering from a particularly nasty cancer from which no amount of prayer (or medical treatment, incidentally) could save her. Another do-gooder also suffered cancer, which finally claimed him as well.
