There were two things IIRC that suggested this was more than just a simple correlation.

1. Lead was banned or phased out in petrol at different times in different countries/states. The time lag between this and the drop in crime was the same in all cases.

2. Homicide rates in cities (high lead concentrations) and rural/suburban areas (lower lead concentrations) used to be wildly different. These rates have converged, again with similar time lags in different jurisdictions.
