The issue was one of corporate image. BA had a uniform code that it expected all staff to comply with. This included a &quot;no jewellery&quot; rule. There was also some suggestion that this rule was to prevent chains and bangles getting caught in luggage conveners. 

The uniform policy made allowances for the religious requirements of Muslims and Sikhs. Nadia Eweida argues that if allowance was made for other religions then she had the right to break the uniform requirements by wearing a chain with a cross. The ECHR agreed.

This seems to suggest that an employer can tell its employees what to wear in the course of their duties, but that Christians are an exception.
