A parliamentary committee recommended decriminalising some drugs, while the BMA concentrated on the medical aspects of drug use.

These sorts of narrow reports by panels of experts in the field are all very well. I'm sure they can make some small, marginal contribution to the debate. However, despite the BMA report spending an entire chapter on the biological, psychological and social influences on drug taking, they don't really get to the core of what makes people take drugs.

As a former magistrate I've heard all sorts of sob stories and excuses but I'll tell you what really causes drug taking: selfishness, pure selfishness. It's people thinking they can have instant happiness, totally disregarding the needs of everyone else. What drug addicts need is a change in attitude. They need to discard their selfish lifestyles and adopt a more responsible approach to life. Don't these addicts realise that the high they get from drugs is only temporary? It's nothing compared to the long term satisfaction of helping to build a solid community.

As Guru Nanak said, "The solution to heroin addiction isn't a complex mixture of biological, psychological and social influences, it's selfishness." You see! Guru Nanak says exactly the same as I say, so I must be right!

If only the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Drug Policy Reform and the British Medical Association's Board of Science had consulted me before publishing several hundred pages of in depth research. I could have told them that the cause of drug addiction was selfishness.
