The big news story today is that I went to the pictures. I saw a film called Quartet. It was really good!

It's got Maggie Smith, who's just brilliant, and Michael Gambon, he's just brilliant too, and Billy Connelly, who plays a character who sounds remarkably like Billy Connelly. It's directed by Dustin Hoffman. He's 75 now you know. I remember him as the handsome young star of The Graduate, many, many years ago, and now he's 75! Don't the years just fly by!

The film is about a home for retired musicians and how music helps bring them together. Music can do that you know. It stirs emotions, brings back memories of one's own distant youth, all those many, many years ago, when Dustin Hoffman was part of an exciting new generation of fresh, young actors.

Beethoven said that music was a really good thing, which I think you'll agree was pretty much the last thing you'd have expected Beethoven to say.

My own mother in law is now in a home. It happens to us all in the end, even Dustin Hoffman. She has difficulty remembering names and family members these days. However, music is the light into her soul. As soon as the Ace of Spades comes on you can see her face just light up with recognition and delight.

This is why we use music so much in church. It's all so very spiritual, isn't it?
