VERSION|0.5.1|SUBJECT|Clifford Longley, a distinguished Catholic gentleman who talks a lot about religion, POTY 2012 |CONTENT|Rating 3 out of 5 (Fairly platitudinous)

The new citizenship test has been criticised for not having enough about Catholics in it.

There was a happy time when this green and pleasant land lived under the benevolent rule of enlightened monarchs like Good Queen Mary, where heretics to the one true faith were cheerfully burned at the stake. Then can Bad Queen Bess, with her evil Protestantism.

It is often said the history is written by the winners. That's why we here very little about Catholics in Britain . I think we should hear more about Catholics. OK, there have been other minorities too: blacks, Jews, homosexuals, women. Just think how much better they would all have faired if Good Queen Mary had had her way?

Now it seems that even Protestants are in danger of becoming a minority. We could very well see a time when the vast majority of people will consider religion, even the wrong ones, as completely irrelevant and not worth bothering about. Our rich historical tradition, of burning each other at the stake when we were in charge, might sadly be lost forever.
