VERSION|0.5.1|NAME|Dinah|DATE|1360085976|CONTENT|Angela Tilby mentioned the British tendency to sentimentalise our institutions, oblivious to the irony of that statement, for what applies to the NHS applies equally to the Church of England. Some may think fondly of evensong, of spinsters on bicycles on their way to their local parish church, of absent-minded vicars, of homemade cakes at garden fetes, etc, while ignoring the far from noble history of the church, including its oppression of its rivals, its opposition to female suffrage and its support for slavery until it was forced to change its mind. The present day bickering over gay marriage and women bishops shows you only have to lick the saccharine surface to reveal the bitter taste of intolerance and bigotry lying underneath.
Angela unaccountably failed to mention yesterdays succession of the Church of Englands new leader. To make up for this, here is my own tribute.

JUSTIN WELBY
May well be the new Archbishop of Canterbury
But hell still look a prat
When he puts on that hat.
