VERSION|0.5.1|NAME|Alun|DATE|1360579443|CONTENT|@Stoneyground. We used to keep chickens until a few months ago, when a daytime fox took them. We had 6 which had a couple of acres to roam over. They must have been the most pampered chickens ever, because we made up the food for them ourselves, rather than use packaged 'layers pellets'. That stuff just has the protein level boosted with Soy and fish meal. Soy is not good for chickens, it causes problems for their digestive tracts and the oestrogen-like compounds get into the eggs and so to us. They eggs were superb, with deep golden yolks, almost orange.

One of the commonly held false ideas is that chickens are vegetarians, but farmers feed them only vegetable food because that is the cheapest and most convenient. Ours loved meat of all kinds. They were so fond of lamb that we got worried when the farmer put some sheep into the field next to us, in case our chickens made night-time raids on his stock! they also love cheese, but that was a special treat. They would follow us around when we were scything to pickup any insects that were disturbed, and once found a mouse nest and devoured the baby mice.|EMAIL|alunap@mac.com|IP-ADDRESS|170.148.198.156|MODERATIONFLAG|
