VERSION|0.5.1|NAME|John|DATE|1362398121|CONTENT|Hi all,

Posted before - but been a while :)

Firstly, I'm glad I actually listed to TFTD this morning, was actually impressed for the first time with it!

Secondly, I'd like to share what happened after my 7yr old daughter said very proudly in the car over the weekend, "Daddy - do you know what a rainbow is? I do - it's a gods promise. My teacher said so."

I nearly choked and drove off the road, but somehow managed to carry on driving and explain to her what rainbows *actually* are. In fact it turned into a positive thing, as she asked me how we know that and I explained about scientists and doing experiments. She then said, "Daddy - I want to be a scientist when I grow up, can girls be scientists?". I said that of course they can! A very happy daddy in the end.

But - this isn't the first time I've had to explain that god wasn't responsible for something, after she has come home from school. I phoned her teacher this morning to question her (note that it is very unlike me to kick up a fuss - so a big deal!).

I explained my concerns, and was told it was probably from the story of Noahs ark, that they are "learning" about in RE. She was quick to say that they point out to the children that this is a story that Christians believe, and that they learn the "sciency stuff" about how rainbows actually form when they are older.

My reply was that they should emphasise that it is a story *more* (I mean - really, does any practising Christian actually believe Noahs ark?!). Oh, and that by delivering the religious stuff before any science, they must try harder to point out what is fact from what is religious claptrap.

Over reaction on my part?
