I am sure she would find that strange (even objectionable) not because it isn&#039;t a &quot;cultural tradition&quot; in the West (because only about 100 years ago, it certainly was probably in her circles anyway) but because Western cultures value above all the freedom and the autonomy of the individual. It is enshrined in our law. It marked our departure from feudal and church law of the middle ages! Cultural relativism is a slippery slope. If you seriously value the autonomy of the individual (as I am sure AA does) it is deeply problematic at the same time to say &quot;oh, but it also ok not to give people controle over their own lives if you are from some other culture&quot;.
