Thomas Becket, who was Archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered for criticising the policies of Henry II. Rowan Williams, who was also Archbishop of Canterbury although not at the same time as Thomas Becket, also criticised the policies of the government. He didn't get murdered but became Master of Magdalene College instead.

Justin Welby, the latest AB of C, has now criticised the policies of the government. It's part of the job really. As soon as they've been appointed AB of C, they've got to rush down to Canterbury to be officially installed, then they have to rush up to Lambeth Palace. Their first official duty is to criticise the government, thus proving that they are a proper turbulent priest.

The AB of C gets his moral authority from the Invisible Magic Friend, via the Queen, who is his head. Some people don't believe in an Invisible Magic Friend. Others do believe in an Invisible Magic Friend but don't think the AB of C gets any moral authority from him, even via the Queen, who is his head.

Even if you don't think the AB of C gets his moral authority from the Invisible Magic Friend, via the Queen, who is his head, he is still entitled to his point of view.

Democracy isn't just about voting for politicians to give them moral authority. Other people have moral authority too, even the AB of C.
