Did I tell you that he'd retired? I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but he had run a successful business. I can't remember if I added that he felt really useless when he retired. He had no other interests apart from running his business.

Have I mentioned old age, retirement, bus passes recently? As we wise Lords have pointed out, there are growing numbers of elderly people. I think it's really important that old people are well looked after. Those who don't have a bishop's pension, some pocket money from the odd professorship, or maybe even don't receive expenses for spending the day in a nice warm House of Lords, are still entitled to dignity and comfort.

The nice thing about being retired in comfort is having the time to pursue one's interests for their own sake, no longer constrained by targets or goals. That's assuming that you don't have dementia or a stroke, or you don't drop dead or anything.

Many elderly people do voluntary work. I myself am a volunteer Lord, receiving only a meagre daily allowance plus expense.

The Big Book of Magic Stuff recommends the many virtues of the elderly. Poems remind us, and by "us" I do of course mean "you", of the wisdom and experience of old age. Looking after the elderly is the Christian thing to do. Old age is excellent preparation for the invisible magic afterlife where we may purse stamp collecting or building train sets for the rest of eternity.
