I believe that traditionally Scottish fishing boats and most non-factiry fishing fleets work on a basis of mutality or shares with extra shares for the boat and the skipper. Which was the original way that companies worked for Merchant Venturers and the reason that all share the loss of some portion of the cargo if it has to be thrown overboard in order to lighten the load and save the ship.

I am making up a longline for my own fishing from my kayak but we will eat the catch or swop for some veg perhaps. In our old village there wasn't so much direct swopping of produce but a mutual "help yourself" so I would hop next door for some rhubarb and they would have some of our broad beans or Swiss Chard, whatever was in surplus.
