VERSION|0.5.1|NAME|Dinah|DATE|1364818760|CONTENT|The message implicit in todays Thought is that the real threat to Christians and Christianity comes not from militant secularism but militant Islam. I have sometimes wondered if this targeting of secularism may be a displacement activity on the part of the religious who act rather like the man who complains about the bee buzzing around his nose while totally ignoring the tiger waiting to pounce and eat him.

The people in society who ought to be the ones most desperate to cling on to secularism are the religious, because secularism protects them against other religious groups who in the normal order of things would probably kill them for not believing in the right god, or for not worshipping the right god in the right way. Atheists would probably fare better, in not being prepared to die for any of the gods they dont believe in. One only has to look at the Old Testament, that perfect example of non-tolerance towards people of different faiths to see what happens without secularism. As Billings pointed out, democracy alone is not enough.
