What is sleep for? No one knows for sure. What is known, from charities such as The Lullaby Trust, is the strong connection between infant death and sleeping in the wrong position. The trust became important to us when our second daughter died when 6 months old.

Death and sleep are often confused in our language, often to try and avoid references to death itself. We experienced this when our daughter died. Yet even the Bible uses these euphemisms. There is talk of passing away, of falling asleep.

It is said that Napoleon, Churchill, Thatcher and other powerful people needed very little sleep. Be that as it may, we all need some sleep. The most powerful and the weakest all have to surrender control most nights.
