There were restrictions on other saving schemes. Where I worked had an 18/19th century pass book for a mutual sociey and amongst its provisions were that it was illegal to have more than one such account and that money would be forfeit if the depositor joined the militia! I never did find out why.

But then the Government has always been cavalier with ordinary people&#039;s money, raid on teacher&#039;s pension fund in the 1930s and on Cooperative Societies&#039; funds are just two examples.
