The First World War: everybody's talking about it! In pubs and offices, in canteens and taxis, whether you're young or old, all you hear about these days is WWI.

No one's entirely sure what caused it, what its aims were, or why 16 million people had to die to achieve those aims. Whatever they were, let's be grateful that so many people were willing to sacrifice their lives for it. They had to stop in 1918 because they needed a break and had to wait twenty years before round 2.

Did you know that 83,000 Sikhs fought in the two world wars?
Did you know that Albert Einstein (he was a scientist) thought nationalism was infantile?
Did you know that there are still wars today?
Did you know that the UN Security Council is mostly a talking shop that rarely ever does anything?

I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "I wonder what the Sikh Gurus had to say about the world wars?" It's funny you should ask that because that's precisely what I was going to tell you about.

The fourth Guru thought everyone should try being nicer. If there was more niceness in the world then there would be fewer wars. If only people would take the fourth Guru's advice there would be more niceness and fewer wars.

So as we approach the centenary of the war to end wars, part I, let us all remember to strive for more niceness and fewer wars.
