VERSION|0.5.1|SUBJECT|Right Awful Anne Atkins - Agonising Aunt and Vicar's Wife |CONTENT|Rating 5 out of 5 (Extraordinarily platitudinous)

I'd just like to start by gratuitously mentioning Shakespeare: Shakespeare. Gratuitous references to Aristotle and others will follow later.

I went to university you know.

Last night, the Idler Academy Bad Grammar Award went to a letter from 100 academics. The letter criticised the Education Secretary, saying that children would be made to learn "too much, too soon." Yes, I know what you're thinking, confusing an adjective with an adverb. One can scarcely comprehend this illiterate gibberish from these alleged educationalists.

Then there was that appalling Transport For London announcement that "It's safer to stay on the train than attempting to get off." What on earth does that mean? Have these cretins no understanding at all of the difference between an infinitive and a gerund? I really don't see how TFL can function at this level.

This is not just a matter of being pedantic to the point of being laughable. Poor grammar is evidence of poor thinking. It shows an inability to think clearly, logically and rationally, like wot I do.

George Orwell. William Cobbett. Aristotle. Martin Luther.

Therefore the Invisible Magic Friend is the logos, which is Greek for "word."
