Which brings me neatly onto me. My analysis sessions have been doing wonders for me. I'm not nearly as grumpy as I was when I resigned from St Paul's. I'm coming to terms with my lack of control over the world, with my helplessness. I'm learning, once again, what a beautiful place the world can be, how to love and be loved.

Freud didn't believe in an Invisible Magic Friend. He thought it was a fantasy, simply an emotional crutch to counteract our helplessness. Christianity sees the Invisible Magic Friend as something quite different. When Eve gave Adam the fruit from the tree on the instructions of the talking snake, thus creating original sin, this is in fact a metaphor for human helplessness. It is precisely because of this helplessness that we need an emotional crutch in the form of an Invisible Magic Friend.

As you can see, Freud got it all wrong, the words are in a completely different order.

Saint Paul said something too.
