I wanted to be a librarian and was one for something like forty years and do not regret it. But, towards the end a new breed came into libraries and a lot of other professions whose raison d&#039;etre was the career not the service. 

One result from this has been the deprofessionalising of many services resulting in the tail wagging the dog.
