VERSION|0.5.1|NAME|Dinah|DATE|1373492441|CONTENT|I wonder how the BBC goes about recruiting new speakers for TFTD? Does a researcher come up with a list of names which are discussed at a meeting, a candidate chosen and then invited on? Alternatively, do they approach a scholar of the particular religion they wish to recruit from, or a notable cleric, or ask a religious body like the Synod of the C of E, The Islamic Council, etc to put forward a name?

In the case of the Muslim cleric from Cambridge who comes on occasionally, and this new speaker, there is possibly an attempt here to soften the image of Islam and make it palatable to Radio 4 listeners by recruiting Muslims whose voices and delivery sound very English, unthreatening and reasonable. Sometimes they spoil the entire effect by what they say, but perhaps the BBC thinks the listeners, lulled into a false sense of security, will overlook this.
