Of course a joke only works if people understand it. I've got lots of examples of jokes that don't work and luckily you can get to hear them in the next few minutes.

People who speak a different language, or even a different dialect of the same language will often fall silent at the punchline of a joke that they didn't understand.

This is what it's like with the Invisible Magic Friend. Sometimes his English isn't very good and he just doesn't understand what's being asked of him. Other times he just ignores us. The one thing that his complete silence does [i]not[/i] imply is that he isn't there.
