She began so well today. A clear and interesting exposition of what it's like having a child with Aspergers. Then she has to couple that with what it's like to be a Christian, which seemed so crazy, muddled and insulting both to both Christians and to people with Aspergers.

But on second thoughts perhaps she's right- if she's talking about what it's like to be her kind of Christian, rather than speaking for all. It must be continually distressing to have been brought up within what was a virtually universal world-view and to find the world has changed so radically.

I'm thinking of the cosily repressed days of the 1950s, in which middle-class C of E thinking seems to be embedded. Everyone agreed that homosexuality was "perverted", as was virtually all sex apart from the missionary position silently achieved with the lights out on the marital bed. That daddy was the sole bread-winner, had a full-time job which he'd hold for life and may well have inherited from his father whilst mummy stayed at home as house-keeper. You got married before you lived together, you got married in church and your children were baptised. Where we could still sing without irony about the "Rich man in his castle, the poor man at his gate" and the vicar was a key member of the local community and only occasionally a figure of fun.

If that, or anything like it, is the template you hold in your head about how the world "should" be then yes, you will feel like a stranger in your own land. It's the price you pay for holding on to dogma- for holding on to ideas about how things should be rather than putting those ideas to the test and being prepared to drop or modify those found wanting. Convictions create convicts Anne, and based on today's offering it would seem you are trapped in a prison created by holding on too tightly to yours.|IP-ADDRESS|95.149.12.79|MODERATIONFLAG|
