The relatively unknown achievements of Florence Nightingale as one of the founders of statistics reminds me of the numerous women who have made outstanding contributions to science and yet seem to be almost completely unknown, even within their own fields. I keep stumbling across them, almost accidentally.

Jocelyn Bell and Rosalind Franklin rarely get the credit they are due. Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin is almost totally unheard of. And Emmy Noether should be mentioned in the same breath as Newton, Maxwell and Einstein but I'm willing to bet a sizeable number of people have never even heard of her!
