VERSION|0.5.1|NAME|Alun|DATE|1378890712|CONTENT|@Dinah, I have commented on the golden rule in the past. It certainly does predate the gospel according to John, by at least 5-6 centuries. Plato ascribes it to Socrates (although, admittedly, in a less clear form) and the author of John is generally thought to be a neo-platonist. The new tasty mint is as much a greek concoction as a Jewish one, after all, and this bit came from Greece. The eye for an eye stuff was native middle-eastern.

A very clear (and superior) version, the negative form (don't do to others what you wouldn't want done to yourself) was given by Confucius.

I have already said in the past how this rule, while good for humans around 5th C BCE, is clearly inadequate, so a pretty poor effort by an omniscient god. I won't give the arguments again unless people specifically want them.|EMAIL|alunap@mac.com|IP-ADDRESS|170.148.215.156|MODERATIONFLAG|
