Many believers down the ages have struggled with their faith, see-sawing between belief and doubt.  A.N. Wilson is a modern example.  Scepticism when it is acknowledged acts as a foil against bigotry and intolerance, and those who openly admit their doubts usually come over as more attractive and sympathetic characters than the fanatics and dogmatists.  However, I do not think reluctant Christians like Lewis prove the existence of God, any more than reluctant atheists prove his non-existence.
